Review of the Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series

In this review we will tell you about Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series, a package that includes a renewed and improved version of both main chapters of Klonoa

Older gamers will certainly remember Klonoa, the eccentric platform series from Bandai Namco which first saw the light in 1997 on PlayStation 1. Over the years these games have fallen by the wayside, but thankfully that has now changed. To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the series was in fact published Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series, a package that includes a revamped and improved version of both main chapters of the series, and in this review we will talk about it in depth.

Good old Klonoa

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series includes both main chapters of the series, that is Cloned: Door to Phantomile Cloned 2: Lunatea's Veil. These two titles never managed to achieve the same popularity as other great exponents of the genre, but in any case they were able to stand out thanks to their particular and fun gameplay that still today he hasn't aged at all.

Both Klonoa are gods 2.5D horizontally scrolling action platformer and they draw strength above all from the particular way in which it is possible to interact with enemies. By hitting opponents with the protagonist's magic ring you will in fact have the opportunity to “Collect them” and use them in various ways. For example it is possible throw them against other enemies to eliminate them quickly, exploit them to perform jumps in mid-air or use them to solve different ones environmental puzzles. Also, especially in Lunatea's Veil, there are some creatures that have gods unique skills that Klonoa will be able to use to creatively overcome the many obstacles that will appear in front of him.

Despite the simplicity of the gameplay, however, Klonoa is by no means an easy game. In fact, both in the first chapter and in the second, the levels will become more and more complex as you progress in the story and at some point they will end up requesting a certain amount of skill to be completed. In addition, the challenge becomes even more demanding for the completists, who will have to strive to be able to collect all the numerous collectable hidden in each level.

A little laziness - Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series review

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series, in addition to slightly improving the graphics quality of the games, also adds some new feature. For example, it is now possible select a lower difficulty level and equip some skin to change the appearance of the protagonist. Also a basic coop mode which will allow another player to assist you during the games allowing you to perform any number of enhanced jumps that will greatly simplify the experience.

Of course, any additions to the game are welcome, but overall these modifications seemed rather lazy to us. Considering the high cost of the package we would have liked to see some more interesting changes or at least some major improvements from a graphic point of view.

Lack of Style - Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series Review

From a technical point of view the Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series performs very well indeed. During our test (which took place on PS5) the game managed to maintain a very stable framerate even in the most chaotic situations and also we did not run into any kind of bugs. As for the artistic sector, however, we found something to complain about. Obviously the problem is not represented by the style of the two Klonoa, which still appears today as splendid as it is insane, but from the base used for Door to Phantomile. The game contained in this package is in fact based on the remake released in 2008 for Wii and consequently uses simple 3D graphics that are very different from the stunning pixel art featured in the original PS1 game. Overall the 3D used in this version is not bad, but in any case we would have preferred to see a style more akin to the original.

Conclusions

Now the point of our review has finally arrived in which we sum up the Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series. The two chapters of Klonoa contained in the package are really gods great platformers and still are still a lot enjoyable and fun. Also, despite being fairly short games, they have a lot of them collectable which will offer completists a large number of additional hours of gameplay. Unfortunately, however, unlike games, the quality of the package leaves something to be desired. Overall there are some welcome additions, but from that point of view we would certainly have appreciated an extra effort. In any case, however the quality of the two Klonoa remains indisputable and consequently both the most nostalgic players and platformers will surely be able to have a lot of fun thanks to this collection.
